Inside China

Mark Purdy, a sports writer for the San Jose Mercury News spent two weeks in China prior to the Olympics. Sometimes it’s better to get your news from people that don’t cover politics day to day. Here’s how he describes China:

How about this: It’s a little like being in a car accelerating toward 90 mph with a giddy driver hanging on to the wheel for dear life - accompanied, of course, by a terse driving instructor sitting alongside, just to make sure the driver doesn’t get too out of control.

The Chinese, formerly one of the most closed societies on earth, have thrown open their doors for the Games. They might not understand entirely what that means. In spite of the government’s ability to censor and frame the news, there are curious minds afoot.
