Fact or Fiction?

I think in today’s society people read more news and factual (nonfiction) books than in days/decades/centuries past.  Maybe my assumption is wrong, but let’s (this apostrophe “s” is for you AR) go with it anyway.  Is this a good thing or a bad thing for society or for the individuals partaking in such fact consumption as opposed to letting their minds wonder to fictional places and lands through books?  I know I rarely read fiction books - frankly I rarely read books at all in this age of the Internet.  I would theorize that there is a merit to reading fiction and I wonder how this is affecting society in a whole.
