Hot Coffee

Meanwhile, imprerial expansion took coffee to Indonesia, South America, the Caribbean, and other parts of the world. Coffee probably reached North America in the early 1600s. Its popularity spread, and by 1670, coffee had replaced beer as New York City’s favorite breakfast drink.

That is Nancy F. Koehn, describing the spread of coffee in Howard Schultz and Starbucks Coffee Company, a very fun Harvard Business Review case. On a related note, the American recently had a nice discussion, in the form of a book review, about Starbucks’ effect on locally owned coffeehouses. (link)

The definitive history of coffee is Uncommon Grounds, by Mark Pendergrast. I have only read the first chapter, so my endorsement is limited.
